One of the best aspects of teaching this course is that I am fortunate to meet the most amazing people. Parents and carers come to the course for a myriad of reasons - some want to find new skills for parenting, while others may be struggling in this most difficult, yet unappreciated, role. Attending a group focused on parenting allows people to safely share the joys, and difficulties, of being a parent. Over the years, I have been fortunate to receive feedback from parents who have completed the course. I have been touched by the way families have been helped by implementing the P.E.T. skills. Below is some of the (deidentified) feedback:
- "I am finding that parenting with love and compassion for myself and my children is reaping immense rewards. My older daughter is so quick to respond and repair damage from any fights or anger over negotiations and we have a joy-filled and playful time. Punishment, consequences, threats, rewards…are so ineffective compared with acknowledging their needs and feelings."
- "Thanks to Larissa and everyone for your support and sharing of stories during the course. I have learned a lot from this course and feel much closer to my boys as a result."
- "My son is now 18 and if he was a bit younger I would definitely participate in the refresher. The PET course was wonderful and I still use skills learnt when communicating with my son. "
- "I attended one of you PET courses about 6 years ago (invaluable!)"
- After appearing on radio, the interviewer kindly sent me this feedback: “I just wanted to thank you for coming on the show and being such an interesting and informative guest. . . . Your advice and the new slant you suggested using as a parent worked for me and so hopefully for others who were listening. It was brilliant and I have put it to good use. My child and I are on speaking and hugging terms again which is a blessing, thank you."
- "So happy to see you’re still doing the courses!! They made such a big positive difference for me."
- "Every day I refer to your approach one way or another, sometimes failing miserably and now very aware of just how much and other times blessing you for giving me new tools in the parenting tool box which actually work in the long term and allow us all to connect in a dignified way. So many times I use this now with the many adults I come into contact with and notice how effective it is."
- "I may have been ‘compelled’ to do the course but it has turned out a really wonderful bonus and I am so glad that it came up on my web search and that I finally said, after seeing your name and ads for so many years (I actually think I saw the very first!), yes, this time! Despite having read the book (and many others) many years ago, this was a very different experience. I felt comfortable in making comments, which is great. I suspect/hope it will have many beneficial repercussions for time to come if I can even put into practice just a little of what you explored with us all. I found it very humbling to see so many good people (especially fathers) trying so hard and being so honest, and thankful that you are taking so much time from yourself and your family for us."
